Editorial Methodology

Last updated: June 2026

Shampoosy is a product research and curation site focused on beauty, grooming, and wellness. Every buying guide and product gallery on this site follows the process described below. We publish this methodology so readers can understand exactly how we work and why they can trust our recommendations.

1. How We Select Products to Research

We focus on product categories that matter to daily self-care: skincare fundamentals, hair care routines, men's grooming, body care, and wellness essentials. Our editors identify categories based on reader questions, seasonal needs, and direct feedback through our contact page.

Within a category, we start with a broad pool of products that have at least 100 verified reviews on Amazon.com and a minimum 4.0-star aggregate rating sustained over at least 6 months. We specifically look for products with consistent availability and clear ingredient or material documentation.

2. Review Analysis Process

We do not simply sort by star rating. Our editors read through verified purchase reviews systematically, looking for:

  • Long-term results — reviews posted 3–12 months after purchase that describe real-world performance over time
  • Skin/hair type compatibility — whether the reviewer's situation matches the use case we're evaluating for (e.g., a moisturizer review from someone with similar skin type)
  • Failure patterns — recurring complaints about specific issues (irritation, allergic reactions, product separation, packaging failures)
  • Fragrance sensitivity — feedback from users who are sensitive to scents, which is a key concern for many in our audience

3. Ingredient and Material Research

For skincare and haircare products, we cross-reference ingredient lists with cosmetic labeling guides and dermatology resources. We do not provide medical treatment advice, but we do explain common ingredients (retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salicylic acid) based on publicly available cosmetic science information.

For grooming tools and devices, we compare manufacturer spec sheets with safety certifications and durability notes. We look for products with clear safety features, especially for electrical devices like electric toothbrushes, trimmers, and styling tools.

4. Category-Specific Criteria

Each guide applies criteria appropriate to that product category. Examples:

  • Skincare: ingredient transparency, suitability for sensitive skin, packaging that preserves product stability
  • Hair care: compatibility with different hair types and curl patterns, fragrance-free options, sulfate-free formulations where relevant
  • Men's grooming: blade quality and durability, battery life for electric tools, ergonomic design
  • Body care: moisturizing effectiveness, fragrance options, ease of application

5. Ranking and Ordering

Products are ranked primarily by overall value for the most common buyer in that category. "Best overall" means the product that performs well across the widest range of realistic use cases — not the highest-spec option or the cheapest. We include budget picks and premium alternatives where the price difference delivers genuinely different outcomes.

Rank order is never influenced by commission rates. A product that earns us a 1% commission can outrank a product that earns 8% if it's the better recommendation. Our credibility with readers is more valuable than any single commission optimization.

6. Affiliate Disclosure

Shampoosy participates in the Amazon Associates Program. When you click a product link and make a purchase on Amazon.com, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we fund the research time that goes into each guide.

Affiliate links do not change prices. The price you see on Amazon.com is the same whether you arrive via our link or type the URL directly. We disclose this relationship clearly on every page that contains affiliate links.

7. How We Handle Updates

Products go out of stock, get discontinued, receive formula changes, or develop new quality issues over time. We revisit each guide on a regular schedule and update picks when:

  • A product is discontinued or consistently out of stock
  • A pattern of new negative reviews emerges after a formula change
  • A meaningfully better option enters the market at the same price point
  • Pricing shifts significantly change the value calculation

Significant updates are reflected in the "Last updated" date shown on each article or gallery page.

8. What We Don't Do

  • We do not accept payment from brands to feature their products
  • We do not receive free products from manufacturers in exchange for reviews
  • We do not publish sponsored content labeled as editorial recommendations
  • We do not make static price claims — prices change daily and we link directly to Amazon.com so you always see the current price
  • We do not provide medical treatment advice — skincare and haircare content is educational and based on cosmetic science, not medical diagnosis
